How to install an eSIM on Android

By Aviendra · Updated

Short answer

Open your SIM settings, choose to add an eSIM, and scan the QR code from your confirmation email. Then select the new eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Exact menu names depend on the phone brand and Android version.

Before you start

  • Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.
  • Be on Wi-Fi or mobile data while you add the eSIM.
  • Open your confirmation email on a second screen so you can scan the QR code, or use the install link and manual details in the email.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings, then Connections, then SIM manager.
  2. Tap Add eSIM, then Scan QR code from service provider.
  3. Scan the QR code and follow the prompts.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings, then Network & internet, then SIMs.
  2. Tap Add (the plus icon), then follow the prompt to scan a QR code.
  3. Scan the QR code and follow the prompts.

Other Android phones

The path is similar but the names differ. Look for SIM, SIM manager or Mobile network in Settings and an option such as Add eSIM or Download a SIM. If you cannot find it, check your phone maker’s support page.

Set it up for travel

  1. Choose the travel eSIM as the SIM used for mobile data.
  2. Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM.
  3. Leave your home SIM on for calls and texts, or turn it off to avoid roaming charges from your home carrier.

Common questions

My phone has no “Add eSIM” option. Why?
Either the phone does not support eSIM, or it is locked to a carrier that has disabled adding other eSIMs. Check compatibility and ask your carrier about unlocking.
Can I use two SIMs at once on Android?
Many eSIM-capable Android phones support using a physical SIM and an eSIM together. Check your phone’s specifications.
